Dutch Police Disrupt Major Info Stealers RedLine and MetaStealer in Operation Magnus

Oct 29, 2024 Cybercrime / Malware
The Dutch National Police, along with international partners, have announced the disruption of the infrastructure powering two information stealers tracked as RedLine and MetaStealer . The takedown, which took place on October 28, 2024, is the result of an international law enforcement task force codenamed Operation Magnus that involved authorities from the U.S., the U.K., Belgium, Portugal, and Australia. Eurojust, in a statement published today, said the operation led to the shut down of three servers in the Netherlands and the confiscation of two domains (fivto[.]online and spasshik[.]xyz). In total, over 1,200 servers in dozens of countries are estimated to have been used to run the malware. As part of the efforts, one administrator has been charged by the U.S. authorities and two people have been arrested by the Belgian police, the Politie said , adding one of them has since been released, while the other remains in custody. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) has charge...
CERT-UA Identifies Malicious RDP Files in Latest Attack on Ukrainian Entities

CERT-UA Identifies Malicious RDP Files in Latest Attack on Ukrainian Entities

Oct 26, 2024 Cyber Attack / Threat Intelligence
The Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine (CERT-UA) has detailed a new malicious email campaign targeting government agencies, enterprises, and military entities. "The messages exploit the appeal of integrating popular services like Amazon or Microsoft and implementing a zero-trust architecture," CERT-UA said . "These emails contain attachments in the form of Remote Desktop Protocol ('.rdp') configuration files." Once executed, the RDP files establish a connection with a remote server, enabling the threat actors to gain remote access to the compromised hosts, steal data, and plant additional malware for follow-on attacks. Infrastructure preparation for the activity is believed to have been underway since at least August 2024, with the agency stating that it's likely to spill out of Ukraine to target other countries. CERT-UA has attributed the campaign to a threat actor it tracks as UAC-0215. Amazon Web Services (AWS), in an advisory of its own...

Apple Opens PCC Source Code for Researchers to Identify Bugs in Cloud AI Security

Oct 25, 2024 Cloud Security / Artificial Intelligence
Apple has publicly made available its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) Virtual Research Environment (VRE), allowing the research community to inspect and verify the privacy and security guarantees of its offering. PCC, which Apple unveiled earlier this June, has been marketed as the "most advanced security architecture ever deployed for cloud AI compute at scale." With the new technology, the idea is to offload computationally complex Apple Intelligence requests to the cloud in a manner that doesn't sacrifice user privacy. Apple said it's inviting "all security and privacy researchers — or anyone with interest and a technical curiosity — to learn more about PCC and perform their own independent verification of our claims." To further incentivize research, the iPhone maker said it's expanding the Apple Security Bounty program to include PCC by offering monetary payouts ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000 for security vulnerabilities identified in it. Irish Watchdog Imposes Record €310 Million Fine on LinkedIn for GDPR Violations

Oct 25, 2024 Digital Advertising / Privacy
The Irish data protection watchdog on Thursday fined LinkedIn €310 million ($335 million) for violating the privacy of its users by conducting behavioral analyses of personal data for targeted advertising. "The inquiry examined LinkedIn's processing of personal data for the purposes of behavioral analysis and targeted advertising of users who have created LinkedIn profiles (members)," the Data Protection Commission (DPC) said . "The decision [...] concerns the lawfulness, fairness, and transparency of this processing." The penalty has been issued under the European Union's (E.U.) General Data Protection Regulation ( GDPR ), an information privacy law that establishes a framework for the collection, processing, storage, and transfer of personal data in the E.U. and the European Economic Area (EEA). It went into effect on May 25, 2018. The probe, which was initiated following a complaint made to the French Data Protection Authority in 2018, found that Lin...
Permiso State of Identity Security 2024: A Shake-up in Identity Security Is Looming Large

Permiso State of Identity Security 2024: A Shake-up in Identity Security Is Looming Large

Oct 23, 2024 Identity Security / Data Protection
Identity security is front, and center given all the recent breaches that include Microsoft, Okta, Cloudflare and Snowflake to name a few. Organizations are starting to realize that a shake-up is needed in terms of the way we approach identity security both from a strategic but also a technology vantage point.  Identity security is more than just provisioning access  The conventional view of viewing identity security as primarily concerned with provisioning and de-provisioning access for applications and services, often in a piecemeal manner, is no longer sufficient. This view was reflected as a broad theme in the Permiso Security State of Identity Security Report (2024) , which finds that despite growing levels of confidence in the ability to identify security risk, nearly half of organizations (45%) remain “concerned” or “extremely concerned” about their current tools being able to detect and protect against identity security attacks.  The Permiso commissioned survey co...

Researchers Discover Severe Security Flaws in Major E2EE Cloud Storage Providers

Oct 21, 2024 Encryption / Data Protection
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered severe cryptographic issues in various end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) cloud storage platforms that could be exploited to leak sensitive data. "The vulnerabilities range in severity: in many cases a malicious server can inject files, tamper with file data, and even gain direct access to plaintext," ETH Zurich researchers Jonas Hofmann and Kien Tuong Truong said . "Remarkably, many of our attacks affect multiple providers in the same way, revealing common failure patterns in independent cryptographic designs." The identified weaknesses are the result of an analysis of five major providers such as Sync, pCloud, Icedrive, Seafile, and Tresorit. The devised attack techniques hinge on a malicious server that's under an adversary's control, which could then be used to target the service providers' users. A brief description of the flaws uncovered in the cloud storage systems is as follows - Sync, in which a maliciou...

Astaroth Banking Malware Resurfaces in Brazil via Spear-Phishing Attack

Oct 16, 2024 Cyber Attack / Banking Trojan
A new spear-phishing campaign targeting Brazil has been found delivering a banking malware called Astaroth (aka Guildma) by making use of obfuscated JavaScript to slip past security guardrails. "The spear-phishing campaign's impact has targeted various industries, with manufacturing companies, retail firms, and government agencies being the most affected," Trend Micro said in a new analysis. "The malicious emails often impersonate official tax documents, using the urgency of personal income tax filings to trick users into downloading the malware." The cybersecurity company is tracking the threat activity cluster under the name Water Makara. It's worth pointing out that Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has assigned the moniker PINEAPPLE to a similar intrusion set that delivers the same malware to Brazilian users. Both these campaigns share a point of commonality in that they commence with phishing messages that impersonate official entities su...
