A likely lone wolf actor behind the EncryptHub persona was acknowledged by Microsoft for discovering and reporting two security flaws in Windows last month, painting a picture of a "conflicted" individual straddling a legitimate career in cybersecurity and pursuing cybercrime. In a new extensive analysis published by Outpost24 KrakenLabs, the Swedish security company unmasked the up-and-coming cybercriminal, who, about 10 years ago, fled his hometown in Kharkov, Ukraine, to a new place somewhere near the Romanian coast. The vulnerabilities were credited by Microsoft to a party named "SkorikARI with SkorikARI," which has been assessed to be another username used by EncryptHub. The cascading supply chain attack that initially targeted Coinbase before becoming more widespread to single out users of the "tj-actions/changed-files" GitHub Action has been traced further back to the theft of a personal access token ( PAT ) related to SpotBugs. "The attackers obtained initial access by taking advantage of the GitHub Actions workflow of SpotBugs, a popular open-source tool for static analysis of bugs in code," Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said in an update this week. "This enabled the attackers to move laterally between SpotBugs repositories, until obtaining access to reviewdog." There is evidence to suggest that the malicious activity began as far back as late November 2024, although the attack against Coinbase did not take place until March 2025. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-22457 (CVSS score: 9.0), concerns a case of a stack-based buffer overflow that could be exploited to execute arbitrary code on affected systems. A maximum severity security vulnerability has been disclosed in Apache Parquet's Java Library that, if successfully exploited, could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on susceptible instances. Apache Parquet is a free and open-source columnar data file format that's designed for efficient data processing and retrieval, providing support for complex data, high-performance compression, and encoding schemes. It was first launched in 2013. The vulnerability in question is tracked as CVE-2025-30065 . It carries a CVSS score of 10.0. "Schema parsing in the parquet-avro module of Apache Parquet 1.15.0 and previous versions allows bad actors to execute arbitrary code," the project maintainers said in an advisory. Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a new vulnerability impacting Google's Quick Share data transfer utility for Windows that could be exploited to achieve a denial-of-service (DoS) or send arbitrary files to a target's device without their approval. Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a now-patched privilege escalation vulnerability in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Cloud Run that could have allowed a malicious actor to access container images and even inject malicious code. "The vulnerability could have allowed such an identity to abuse its Google Cloud Run revision edit permissions in order to pull private Google Artifact Registry and Google Container Registry images in the same account," Tenable security researcher Liv Matan said in a report shared with The Hacker News. Exposed PostgreSQL instances are the target of an ongoing campaign designed to gain unauthorized access and deploy cryptocurrency miners. Cloud security firm Wiz said the activity is a variant of an intrusion set that was first flagged by Aqua Security in August 2024 that involved the use of a malware strain dubbed PG_MEM . The campaign has been attributed to a threat actor Wiz tracks as JINX-0126. "The threat actor has since evolved, implementing defense evasion techniques such as deploying binaries with a unique hash per target and executing the miner payload filelessly – likely to evade detection by [cloud workload protection platform] solutions that rely solely on file hash reputation," researchers Avigayil Mechtinger, Yaara Shriki, and Gili Tikochinski said . Cybersecurity researchers are warning of a spike in suspicious login scanning activity targeting Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS GlobalProtect gateways, with nearly 24,000 unique IP addresses attempting to access these portals. "This pattern suggests a coordinated effort to probe network defenses and identify exposed or vulnerable systems, potentially as a precursor to targeted exploitation," threat intelligence firm GreyNoise said . The surge is said to have commenced on March 17, 2025, sustaining at nearly 20,000 unique IP addresses per day before dropping off on March 26.
