Passwordless AND Keyless: The Future of (Privileged) Access Management

Passwordless AND Keyless: The Future of (Privileged) Access Management

Sep 20, 2024 Privileged Access Management
In IT environments, some secrets are managed well and some fly under the radar. Here’s a quick checklist of what kinds of secrets companies typically manage, including one type they should manage: Passwords [x] TLS certificates [x] Accounts [x] SSH keys ??? The secrets listed above are typically secured with privileged access management (PAM) solutions or similar. Yet, most traditional PAM vendors hardly talk about SSH key management. The reason is simple: they don’t have the technology to do it properly.  We can prove it. All our SSH key management customers have had a traditional PAM deployed, but they realized that they couldn’t manage SSH keys with it. At best, traditional PAMs can discover, let alone manage, 20% of all keys. So, what’s the fuss about SSH keys? SSH keys are access credentials in the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol. In many ways, they’re just like passwords but functionally different. On top of that, keys tend to outnumber passwords, especially in long-st...

Hackers Exploit Default Credentials in FOUNDATION Software to Breach Construction Firms

Hackers Exploit Default Credentials in FOUNDATION Software to Breach Construction Firms

Sep 19, 2024 Cyber Attack / Hacking
Threat actors have been observed targeting the construction sector by infiltrating the FOUNDATION Accounting Software , according to new findings from Huntress. "Attackers have been observed brute-forcing the software at scale, and gaining access simply by using the product’s default credentials," the cybersecurity company said . Targets of the emerging threat include plumbing, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), concrete, and other related sub-industries. The FOUNDATION software comes with a Microsoft SQL (MS SQL) Server to handle database operations, and, in some cases, has the TCP port 4243 open to directly access the database via a mobile app. Huntress said the server includes two high-privileged accounts, including "sa," a default system administrator account, and "dba," an account created by FOUNDATION, that are often left with unchanged default credentials. A consequence of this action is that threat actors could brute-force th...
Exposed Selenium Grid Servers Targeted for Crypto Mining and Proxyjacking

Exposed Selenium Grid Servers Targeted for Crypto Mining and Proxyjacking

Sep 12, 2024 Cryptocurrency / Network Security
Internet-exposed Selenium Grid instances are being targeted by bad actors for illicit cryptocurrency mining and proxyjacking campaigns. "Selenium Grid is a server that facilitates running test cases in parallel across different browsers and versions," Cado Security researchers Tara Gould and Nate Bill said in an analysis published today. "However, Selenium Grid's default configuration lacks authentication, making it vulnerable to exploitation by threat actors." The abuse of publicly-accessible Selenium Grid instances for deploying crypto miners was previously highlighted by cloud security firm Wiz in late July 2024 as part of an activity cluster dubbed SeleniumGreed . Cado, which observed two different campaigns against its honeypot server, said the threat actors are exploiting the lack of authentication protections to carry out a diverse set of malicious actions. The first of them leverages the " goog:chromeOptions " dictionary to inject a Ba...
Why Is It So Challenging to Go Passwordless?

Why Is It So Challenging to Go Passwordless?

Sep 11, 2024 Password Security / Identity Management
Imagine a world where you never have to remember another password. Seems like a dream come true for both end users and IT teams, right? But as the old saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."  If your organization is like many, you may be contemplating a move to passwordless authentication. But the reality is that a passwordless security approach comes with its own set of pitfalls and perils. In this post, we’ll discuss the real-world complexity of going passwordless and explore why strengthening your existing password protocols may be the simpler solution.  The appeal of passwordless authentication Password-related vulnerabilities pose a major threat to organizational security. According to research by  LastPass , a full 80% of data breaches stem from weak, reused, or compromised passwords. This sobering statistic highlights the appeal of passwordless systems, which offer a way to completely circumvent the risks associated with traditional pas...
One More Tool Will Do It? Reflecting on the CrowdStrike Fallout

One More Tool Will Do It? Reflecting on the CrowdStrike Fallout

Sep 09, 2024 Data Protection / Threat Detection
The proliferation of cybersecurity tools has created an illusion of security. Organizations often believe that by deploying a firewall, antivirus software, intrusion detection systems, identity threat detection and response , and other tools, they are adequately protected. However, this approach not only fails to address the fundamental issue of the attack surface but also introduces dangerous third-party risk to the mix. The world of cybersecurity is in a constant state of flux, with cybercriminals becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics. In response, organizations are investing heavily in cybersecurity tools, hoping to build an impenetrable fortress around their digital assets. However, the belief that adding "just one more cybersecurity tool" will magically fix your attack surface and enhance your protection is a dangerous misconception. The limitations of cybersecurity tools Cybersecurity tools, while essential, have inherent limitations. They are designe...

"The HSQLDB is only included to facilitate installation, has been deprecated, and is not intended for production use per vendor guides. However, users who have not configured FileCatalyst Workflow to use an alternative database per recommendations are vulnerable to attack from any source that can reach the HSQLDB." Cybersecurity company Tenable, which has been credited wi...
How to Automate the Hardest Parts of Employee Offboarding

How to Automate the Hardest Parts of Employee Offboarding

Aug 19, 2024 SaaS Account Management
According to recent research on  employee offboarding , 70% of IT professionals say they’ve experienced the negative effects of incomplete IT offboarding, whether in the form of a security incident tied to an account that wasn't deprovisioned, a surprise bill for resources that aren’t in use anymore, or a missed handoff of a critical resource or account. This is despite an average of five hours spent per departing employee on activities like finding and deprovisioning SaaS accounts. As the SaaS footprint within most organizations continues to expand, it is becoming exponentially more difficult (and time-consuming) to ensure all access is deprovisioned or transferred when an employee leaves the organization.  How Nudge Security can help Nudge Security is a  SaaS management platform  for modern IT governance and security. It discovers every cloud and SaaS account ever created by anyone in your organization, including generative AI apps, giving you a single source of...

Aug 15, 2024 Identity Security / Threat Detection
The Emergence of Identity Threat Detection and Response Identity Threat Detection and Response (ITDR) has emerged as a critical component to effectively detect and respond to identity-based attacks. Threat actors have shown their ability to compromise the identity infrastructure and move laterally into IaaS, Saas, PaaS and CI/CD environments. Identity Threat Detection and Response solutions help organizations better detect suspicious or malicious activity in their environment. ITDR solutions give security teams the ability to help teams answer the question “What’s happening right now in my environment - what are my identities doing in my environments.” Human and Non-Human Identities As outlined in the ITDR Solution Guide, comprehensive ITDR solutions cover both human and non-human identities. Human identities entail the workforce (employees), guests (contractors), and vendors. Non-human identities include tokens, keys, service accounts, and bots. Multi- environment ITDR solutions c...
