Apple Warns Older iPhones Vulnerable to Coruna, DarkSword Exploit Kit Attacks

Mar 20, 2026 Mobile Security / Malware
Apple is urging users who are still running an outdated version of iOS to update their iPhones to secure against web-based attacks carried out via powerful exploit kits like Coruna and DarkSword . These attacks employ malicious web content to target out-of-date versions of iOS, triggering an infection chain that leads to the theft of sensitive data. "For example, if you're using an older version of iOS and were to click a malicious link or visit a compromised website, the data on your iPhone might be at risk of being stolen," Apple said in a support document. "We thoroughly investigated these issues as they were found and released software updates as quickly as possible for the most recent operating system versions to address vulnerabilities and disrupt such attacks."

Coruna iOS Exploit Kit Uses 23 Exploits Across Five Chains Targeting iOS 13–17.2.1

Mar 04, 2026 Threat Intelligence / Mobile Security
Google said it identified a "new and powerful" exploit kit dubbed Coruna (aka CryptoWaters) targeting Apple iPhone models running iOS versions between 13.0 and 17.2.1. The exploit kit featured five full iOS exploit chains and a total of 23 exploits, Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) said. It's not effective against the latest version of iOS. The findings were first reported by WIRED. "The core technical value of this exploit kit lies in its comprehensive collection of iOS exploits, with the most advanced ones using non-public exploitation techniques and mitigation bypasses," according to GTIG. "The framework surrounding the exploit kit is extremely well engineered; the exploit pieces are all connected naturally and combined together using common utility and exploitation frameworks." The kit is said to have circulated among multiple threat actors since February 2025, moving from a commercial surveillance operation to a government-backed att...

Apple Tests End-to-End Encrypted RCS Messaging in iOS 26.4 Developer Beta

Feb 17, 2026 Encryption / Mobile Security
Apple on Monday released a new developer beta of iOS and iPadOS with support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in Rich Communications Services ( RCS ) messages. The feature is currently available for testing in iOS and iPadOS 26.4 Beta, and is expected to be shipped to customers in a future update for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS. "End-to-end encryption is in beta and is not available for all devices or carriers," Apple said in its release notes. "Conversations labeled as encrypted are encrypted end-to-end, so messages can't be read while they're sent between devices." The iPhone maker also pointed out that the availability of RCS encryption is limited to conversations between Apple devices, and not other platforms like Android. The secure messaging test arrives nearly a year after the GSM Association (GSMA) formally announced support for E2EE for safeguarding messages sent via the RCS protocol. E2EE for RCS‌ will require Apple to update to ‌RCS‌ Un...

New MacSync macOS Stealer Uses Signed App to Bypass Apple Gatekeeper

Dec 24, 2025 Malware / Endpoint Security
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new variant of a macOS information stealer called MacSync that's delivered by means of a digitally signed, notarized Swift application masquerading as a messaging app installer to bypass Apple's Gatekeeper checks. "Unlike earlier MacSync Stealer variants that primarily rely on drag-to-terminal or ClickFix -style techniques, this sample adopts a more deceptive, hands-off approach," Jamf researcher Thijs Xhaflaire said . The Apple device management firm and security company said the latest version is distributed as a code-signed and notarized Swift application within a disk image (DMG) file named "zk-call-messenger-installer-3.9.2-lts.dmg" that's hosted on "zkcall[.]net/download." The fact that it's signed and notarized means it can be run without being blocked or flagged by built-in security controls like Gatekeeper or XProtect. Despite this, the installer has been found to display instructio...
Italy Fines Apple €98.6 Million Over ATT Rules Limiting App Store Competition

Italy Fines Apple €98.6 Million Over ATT Rules Limiting App Store Competition

Dec 24, 2025 Privacy / Antitrust
Apple has been fined €98.6 million ($116 million) by Italy's antitrust authority after finding that the company's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) privacy framework restricted App Store competition. The Italian Competition Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato, or AGCM) said the company's "absolute dominant position" in app distribution allowed it to "unilaterally impose" the ATT rules on third-party app developers, without consulting with them beforehand. The investigation was launched in May 2023. The AGCM said it's not calling into question Apple's decision to adopt safeguards designed to enhance users' privacy on iOS, but rather it's taking issue with the consent requirements that are excessively burdensome for developers and "disproportionate" to the stated objectives of ATT. Specifically, this requires developers to serve both ATT- and GDPR-related permission prompts in apps for iPhone and iPad ...
