Google has fixed a series of serious vulnerabilities in its Chrome OS , including three high-risk bugs that could be used for code execution on vulnerable machines. Bug bounties is the cash prizes offered by open source communities to anyone who finds key software bugs have been steadily on the rise for several years now. As part of its reward program, Google paid out $31,336 to a researcher who found three of the vulnerabilities . Google's post notes : " We're pleased to reward Ralf-Philipp Weinmann $31,336 under the Chromium Vulnerability Rewards Program for a chain of three bugs, including demo exploit code and very detailed write-up. We are grateful to Ralf for his work to help keep our users safe. " The three-bug chain credited to Weinmann exploited O3D, a JavaScript API (application programming interface) designed for crafting interactive 3-D graphics-based Web applications. More than 18 million smartphones and other mobile devices made by HTC are at risk vulnerable to many security and privacy issue. The Federal Trade Commission charged HTC with customizing the software on its Android- and Windows based phones in ways that let third-party applications install software that could steal personal information. The vulnerabilities placed sensitive information about millions of consumers at risk and potentially permitted malicious applications to send text messages, record audio and install additional malware without a user's knowledge or consent.  FTC identify many vulnerabilities including, insecure implementation of two logging applications i.e Carrier IQ and HTC Loggers . The agency also found programming flaws that let third-party apps bypass Android's permission-based security model. The  ransomware industry surged in 2023  as it saw an alarming 55.5% increase in victims worldwide, reaching a staggering 5,070.  But 2024 is starting off showing a very different picture.  While the numbers skyrocketed in Q4 2023 with 1309 cases, in Q1 2024, the ransomware industry was down to 1,048 cases. This is a 22% decrease in ransomware attacks compared to Q4 2023. Security vulnerabilities discovered in Dormakaba's Saflok electronic RFID locks used in hotels could be weaponized by threat actors to forge keycards and stealthily slip into locked rooms. The shortcomings have been collectively named  Unsaflok  by researchers Lennert Wouters, Ian Carroll, rqu, BusesCanFly, Sam Curry, sshell, and Will Caruana. They were reported to the Zurich-based company in September 2022. "When combined, the identified weaknesses allow an attacker to unlock all rooms in a hotel using a single pair of forged keycards," they  said . Full technical specifics about the vulnerabilities have been withheld, considering the potential impact, and are expected to be made public in the future. The issues impact more than three million hotel locks spread across 13,00 properties in 131 countries. A collection of 21 security flaws have been discovered in Sierra Wireless AirLink cellular routers and open-source software components like  TinyXML  and  OpenNDS . Collectively tracked as  Sierra:21 , the issues expose over 86,000 devices across critical sectors like energy, healthcare, waste management, retail, emergency services, and vehicle tracking to cyber threats, according to Forescout Vedere Labs. A majority of these devices are located in the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, and Thailand. "These vulnerabilities may allow attackers to steal credentials, take control of a router by injecting malicious code, persist on the device and use it as an initial access point into critical networks," the industrial cybersecurity company  said  in a new analysis. Though it's not Patch Tuesday, Adobe today released a massive batch of out-of-band software updates for six of its products to patch a total of 41 new security vulnerabilities. Adobe last week made a pre-announcement to inform its users of an upcoming security update for Acrobat and Reader, but the company today unveiled bugs in a total of 6 widely-used software, including: Adobe Genuine Integrity Service Adobe Acrobat and Reader Adobe Photoshop Adobe Experience Manager Adobe ColdFusion Adobe Bridge According to the security advisories, 29 of the 41 vulnerabilities are critical in severity, and the other 11 have been rated important. Adobe Acrobat and Reader software for Windows and macOS systems contain 13 flaws, out of which 9 are critical. Today Adobe released a patch for two critical vulnerabilities (CVE-2013-0640 and CVE-2013-0641) that are already being exploited by attackers. Adobe released version 11.0.02 of its Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat Pro applications.  Vulnerabilities affect Adobe Reader and Acrobat XI (11.0.01 and earlier), X (10.1.5 and earlier) and 9.5.3 and earlier for Windows and Mac OS X systems. " These updates address vulnerabilities that could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system ." security advisory  reads . Exploits were discovered by security company FireEye and researchers with antivirus provider Kaspersky Lab have confirmed the exploit can successfully escape the Adobe sandbox. Users can update the software through the built-in updater or by downloading a copy of the  Windows ,  Mac , or  Linux  installer directly from Adobe's website.

Cybersecurity researchers today uncovered details of two new vulnerabilities in the GoAhead web server software, a tiny application widely embedded in hundreds of millions of Internet-connected smart devices. One of the two vulnerabilities, assigned as CVE-2019-5096, is a critical code execution flaw that can be exploited by attackers to execute malicious code on vulnerable devices and take control over them. The first vulnerability resides in the way multi-part/form-data requests are processed within the base GoAhead web server application, affecting GoAhead Web Server versions v5.0.1, v.4.1.1, and v3.6.5. According to the researchers at Cisco Talos, while processing a specially crafted HTTP request, an attacker exploiting the vulnerability can cause use-after-free condition on the server and corrupt heap structures, leading to code execution attacks. Cybersecurity researchers have identified two authentication bypass flaws in open-source Wi-Fi software found in Android, Linux, and ChromeOS devices that could trick users into joining a malicious clone of a legitimate network or allow an attacker to join a trusted network without a password. The vulnerabilities, tracked as CVE-2023-52160 and CVE-2023-52161, have been discovered following a security evaluation of  wpa_supplicant  and Intel's iNet Wireless Daemon ( IWD ), respectively. A chain of two critical flaws has been disclosed in Alibaba Cloud's ApsaraDB RDS for PostgreSQL and AnalyticDB for PostgreSQL that could be exploited to breach tenant isolation protections and access sensitive data belonging to other customers. Cisco on Wednesday released security patches for 45 vulnerabilities affecting a variety of products, some of which could be exploited to execute arbitrary actions with elevated permissions on affected systems. Google on Tuesday announced the open source availability of  OSV-Scanner , a scanner that aims to offer easy access to vulnerability information about various projects. The  Go-based tool , powered by the Open Source Vulnerabilities ( OSV ) database, is designed to connect "a project's list of dependencies with the vulnerabilities that affect them," Google software engineer Rex Pan in a post shared with The Hacker News. "The OSV-Scanner generates reliable, high-quality vulnerability information that closes the gap between a developer's list of packages and the information in vulnerability databases," Pan added. The idea is to identify all the transitive dependencies of a project and highlight relevant vulnerabilities using data pulled from OSV.dev database. Google further stated that the open source platform supports 16 ecosystems, counting all major languages, Linux distributions (Debian and Alpine), as well as Android, Linux Kernel, and  OSS-Fuzz .

Google has disclosed that two Android security flaws impacting its Pixel smartphones have been exploited in the wild by forensic companies. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is warning of critical vulnerabilities affecting Philips Tasy electronic medical records (EMR) system that could be exploited by remote threat actors to extract sensitive personal data from patient databases.
