A U.S. Grand jury indicted and accused 13 members of the hacking group Anonymous for allegedly participating in the cyber attacks against a number of websites as an  anti-copyright campaign called " Operation Payback " Hackers took down the sites by inflicting a denial of service, or DDoS, attack , including those belonging to the Recording Industry Association of America, Visa and MasterCard. The attacks were in retaliation for the shutdown of " The Pirate Bay ," a Sweden-based file-sharing website used to illegally download copyrighted material. The DDoS Campaign was later extended to Bank of America and credit card companies such as Visa and MasterCard after they refused to process payments for WikiLeaks . According to the indictment, the suspects are charged with conspiracy to intentionally cause damage to protected computers. Suspects downloaded and used software known as Low Orbit Ion Cannon , or LOIC, to launch distributed denial-of-service

Peter Sunde ,   the former spokesman for The Pirate Bay has announced he will run in the European Parliament elections next year. Sunde, will participate for the Finnish branch of the Pirate Party. The Pirate Party was founded in Sweden in 2006, and in 2009 Christian Engström was the first member of the Pirate Party elected to European Parliament. The Pirate Bay co-founder  Gottfrid Svartholm Warg (Anakata)  charged with hacking the IBM mainframe of Logica, a Swedish IT firm that provided tax services to the Swedish government, and the IBM mainframe of the Swedish Nordea bank. Svartholm has been charged with several hacking related offenses including serious fraud , attempted aggravated fraud, and aiding attempted aggravated fraud. Three other defendants received similar charges. He was arrested in Cambodia in September 2012 and deported to Sweden where he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Logica hack. 28-year-old computer specialist Svartholm and other founders of The Pirate Bay were found guilty by the Swedish government in 2009 for facilitating the illegal downloading of copyrighted materials.
